🧠What Is an Elmer?
An Elmer is an experienced amateur radio operator who helps newer hams learn the ropes — not through lectures, but through real, practical guidance. The term dates back to a 1971 QST article and has become a core part of ham‑radio culture.
🔧 Why Elmering Matters
Even with thousands of YouTube videos available, nothing replaces a mentor who can:
- Help troubleshoot your specific station
- Teach operating etiquette you won’t find in manuals
- Give honest feedback on your CW, digital, or phone operating
- Guide you through equipment choices that actually make sense
- Help you navigate local repeaters, nets, and club activities
- Show you how to solve real‑world issues like RFI, grounding, and antenna placement
