Winter Field Day a success in Calhoun County

IMG_2760The Calhoun County Emergency Operations Center hosted the Columbia Amateur Radio Club for SPAR Winter Field Day on Jan. 25.

Operating on generator power out of three trailers, the club contacted more than 160 stations using voice, digital and Morse code. The QSO total was a record high for the club for this particular event, which traditionally kicks off the club’s activity calendar for the year.

This year’s event was managed by CARC director 2014-2015 Dave, W4DMC, with added support from Bill, W4FSV. Club members began raising antennas Saturday around 9 a.m. at the Calhoun County EOC, placing two dipoles and two delta loops in the air to cover four operating positions for all bands and all modes.

The club enjoyed the comfort of three trailers, including the SCHEART Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio trailer, the Calhoun County Incident Command trailer and CARC’s own club trailer. More than a dozen radio amateurs were on-hand to help with logging, operating and setup.

Winter Field Day is hosted annually by the Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio. Amateurs nationally compete to see who can score the most contacts during the 24-hour period. Participating stations are required to exchange a true signal report, the temperature at their location, and their class category (indoor, outdoor, home station). But the exercise isn’t just for fun; it tests the readiness and ability of hams to pass traffic during natural disasters that may occur in challenging winter conditions.

CARC’s next major event will be a support role for Lexington Medical Center’s Colon Cancer Challenge Bike Ride on March 29, 2014.
