Register now for SPAR Winter Field Day, Jan. 25

sparlogoThe Columbia Amateur Radio Club will participate in Winter Field Day activities promoted by the Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio (SPAR) on January 25 in Calhoun County.

The event is open to the general public and all licensed amateurs are welcome to come out and participate in this field exercise. Amateurs nationally will compete to see who can score the most contacts during a 24-hour period. But the exercise isn’t just for fun; it tests the readiness and ability of hams to pass traffic during natural disasters that may occur in challenging winter conditions.

This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Calhoun County Emergency Management / EMS facility located at 1722 Old State Road, Gaston, SC. Participants are invited to bring their own food and drink, and dress accordingly for weather conditions, as we will be operating outdoors. Bands and modes will be assigned to operators Saturday morning depending on how many stations are available.

Those who intend to participate should register using the form below. If you intend to bring a station, you should bring EVERYTHING you need to get on the air, including, but not limited to: A transceiver, coax, an antenna, a key/paddles/keyer, a battery/power supply, table, chairs, a laptop for logging, etc.

The exercise officially begins at 1700 UTC (noon EST) Saturday and runs through 1700 UTC Sunday. The rules encourage as many contacts on as many bands and modes as possible, because during a real emergency, the most important factor is the ability to communicate, regardless of band, mode or distance.

The official rules can be found at the SPAR web site.
