ARRL Field Day operation set for June 27-28

2015 Field Day Logo Red Design 1The Columbia Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual “Field Day” operation at the Calhoun County Emergency Operations Center on June 27-28.

The public is invited to attend this nationwide event, in which radio amateurs across the country will test and show off their emergency communication capabilities. The event begins at 2 p.m. and runs 24 hours. Club members are encouraged to come early to help set up and receive instruction on the radios and logging prior to the 2 p.m. launch. Dinner will be served around 6 p.m.

The Calhoun EOC is located at 1736 Old State Road, Gaston, S.C.

The club, along with thousands of radio amateurs across the nation, will attempt to make contacts with other operators, or “hams,” using a variety of emergency communication technology, including Morse code, voice and data transmissions.

Visitors have the opportunity to operate a radio at a “get on the air station” with the supervision of a club member, and can also learn how to obtain their own FCC radio license.

The club intends to operate with at least 5 stations. Setup will begin early Saturday and we will be ready to begin transmitting at the 2 p.m. kick-off time. If you would like to operate a station, see the station’s captain to sign up for an operating time slot.

The objective is to work as many stations as possible on any and all Amateur Radio bands — excluding 60, 30, 17, and 12 meters — and to learn to operate in less-than-optimal conditions. The camaraderie is special, and there’s a place for operators at all skill levels. If you’ve never attended Field Day, this is a great opportunity to come and see amateur radio doing what it does best. Non-hams and new hams will have the opportunity to make contacts at the “Get on the Air” station.

Visitors are encouraged to stay for dinner, which will be provided at no cost. We will be having hamburgers and hot dogs. Guests are free to bring food and drinks. No alcoholic beverages please. You do not have to be a member of CARC to participate and families are welcome/encouraged.

Keep in mind we will be enjoying Field Day in a working emergency operations center, so guests should be mindful of the employees stationed at the EOC, and not interfere with their jobs. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the EOC.

Questions about Field Day, including media inquiries, should be directed to the club’s public information officer, Andy Haworth, KK4DSD.
